Professional Learning: SCTL Programs

Enhance your Teaching Practice

The following section highlights specific SCTL programs and a list of curated external professional learning opportunities. The internal programs are free of charge for all employees but these are built for specific learner populations (i.e., Faculty or All Employees). We will also continue to curate a list of external professional learning programs and update these as they are developed for the college community.

Contemporary Educator Program (CEP)

The Contemporary Educator Program (CEP) is a two-year Faculty development program designed to meet the needs of contemporary learners by providing Faculty with a supportive learning environment to explore new teaching strategies. The program focuses on contemporary trends in teaching and learning by providing Faculty with evidence-based practices to enhance their teaching practice. The program is delivered in a cohort model and connects Faculty to the larger community of practice within SLC.

"Over the past year, participating in the CEP (Contemporary Educator Program) has been both an enriching and rewarding experience. The program is delivered in a collaborative and safe environment with a focus on the individuality of each of the participants. It not only introduces new and innovative tools for curriculum delivery, it also gives cause for regular self-reflection on how to improve as an educator. This program is a gift that could benefit all faculty members. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to participate!"

Participant Feedback

"This program has been an educational treasure chest. Even after teaching for several years, there is so much to learn, and the CEP brings it all together in a coherent manner within a positive learning environment where not only are methods taught, they are also consistently modeled for us.

None of us knew last year what was coming in the form of COVID-19, but the CEP program had us well-prepared for digital learning and alternate delivery. At a time when I feel like I should probably be feeling anxious about the fall term, I’m actually full of excitement. We’ve learned so much in the CEP that I can’t wait to apply it all in the Fall 2020 term.

From Learning Plans to digital teaching strategies, I couldn’t feel better prepared."

This program has provided me with an amazing opportunity to build on my teaching knowledge and skills. The program has brought home for me once again that there is always more to learn, and ways I can better meet the learning needs of my students. In addition, the incredible fellowship of our group of learners and leaders in the program make it so worthwhile. When I tell my colleagues about what I am learning, they say to me: “how can I take that program?”

Inclusion Matters (IM)

The SCTL developed a training suite for all employees (i.e., Support Staff, Faculty, and Administrators) in order to assist them in creating culturally competent and inclusive educational environments. “Inclusion Matters” is a four module program that seeks to engage the college community in meaningful conversations surrounding inclusivity by discussing principles of equity in a supportive learning environment. These modules were designed in consultation with subject matter experts from different fields and includes useful resources/tools.

"This program convinced me that I need to expand my repertoire of teaching techniques."

Participant Feedback

"I learned about the assumptions we make about what people know, and it’s taught me to slow down a bit, and take the time to build relationships and complete tasks. Was very applicable to my role in working with new international students "

"This training was very applicable to my role. But I would say it extends beyond intercultural competence- it provides a guide to how we can approach any human interaction. We need to consider what’s below the iceberg in ALL our interactions "
