Society for Teaching & Learning: Taking Stock 2.0 Webinar Series

A lot has changed in our understanding of and approach to teaching and learning in higher education, since the 2010 publication of Taking Stock: Research on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. And yet, much has stayed the same (despite the current pandemic). We have “taken stock” once again – of what we know now, what has changed and what further change is needed in support of deep and essential learning in our ever-changing world. These are among the issues to be covered in our new book Taking Stock 2.0: Transforming Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

Due to be published in time for the 2022 STLHE annual conference, chapter authors have kindly agreed to showcase their contributions in advance. Please register for one or more of the following Taking Stock 2.0 webinars:

Best Practices for OER in Canada: A Fresh Look at Fair Dealing for Educational Use

Date: Wednesday, February 23

Time: 1:00pm-2:00pm Eastern

Speaker: Dr. Carys J. Craig, Associate Professor, Osgoode Hall Law School, York University

In this session, Dr. Carys Craig will speak about the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Open Educational Resources, focusing on Appendix 3: Educational Fair Dealing in Canada (which she authored for the Code). Dr. Craig will put these Canadian Best Practices into context: from a comparative perspective, she will explain how they align with US fair use for OER; from a Canadian policy perspective, she will show how their substance is informed by the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence on copyright balance and user rights, which culminated in last year’s important York University v. Access Copyright ruling.

The Spark of Online Learning: How Technology and Emotion Science Invigorates Every Class

Date: Thursday, February 17

Time: 1:00pm-2:00pm Eastern

Speaker: Flower Darby

Emotion and cognition are inextricably linked – how we feel and connect with others impacts both what we learn and how we retain that learning. When we engage in online learning we are not just presenting information and knowledge or teaching a skill, we are engaged with emotional, compassionate, complex people. We can find ways to connect with them emotionally and personally so that we can unleash the opportunity to learn.

That’s the big idea here, but it has very practical implications. These include:

  • How technology can be used to create an emotional connection to students.

  • How we can develop caring and supportive relationships with our students and how they can build a community of inquiry that is mutually supportive.

  • How emotions enable learning and what we can do as teachers to unleash positive emotions – hope, optimism, resilience, efficacy.

In this engaging and interactive webinar, Flower Darby will explore her developing understanding of the joy of teaching and the power of technology to enable truly engaging learning.

Key Takeaways:

  • Understanding why connecting with students at an emotional level matters for effective learning.

  • Identifying how emotions and cognition interrelate.

  • Exploring practical strategies to put the power of emotions to work in your classes.

  • Learning how to create conditions in which you, as a teacher, find the joy in teaching
