Review our Monthly Schedule of Teaching & Learning Opportunities
GenAI can be a powerful tool for learning as well. To help determine if these tools are appropriate for your course and, if so, plan for their use, we suggest the following:
Stress Test your Assessments (to understand what changes may be needed)
Use the AI Assessment Scale (detailed below) to match your course with an approximate level of AI use
Write a course-level AI usage statement well as for each assessment as appropriate
Prepare for Week 1 conversations (even if your determine there are valid reasons for not using AI)
The AI Assessment Scale, or AIAS
The AI Assessment Scale (or AIAS) was designed to achieve the following goals:
Help educators consider how their assessments might need to be adjusted in light of GenAI tools
Clarify to students how and where GenAI tools might be used in their work
Support students in completing assessments in line with the principles of academic integrity
-Perkins et al. (2024)
By matching assessment strategies against the AIAS levels, educators can get a better idea of where GenAI use may be appropriate and what guidelines should be given to learners. Next, let's look at writing AI usage statements.
AI Usage Statements
Usage statements can be helpful (even arguably essential) at both the course and assessment level. The following are samples of course-level usage statements created using Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat.
Course-level Usage Statements: Foundational (~AIAS Level 1)
Welcome to the course! As we dive into the foundational concepts of our subject, it's important to understand the role of AI tools in your learning journey. While these tools can be helpful for research and exploration, relying on them too heavily can hinder your understanding and critical thinking skills.
Key Points to Remember:
Foundational Learning: This course is designed to build your knowledge and skills from the ground up. Engaging with the material yourself is crucial for your academic growth.
Risks of Relying on AI: Using AI tools to complete assignments can lead to a superficial understanding of the content. It may also prevent you from developing essential skills like analysis, synthesis, and problem-solving.
Assessment Integrity: To ensure fairness and maintain the integrity of your assessments, the use of AI tools is not permitted for completing any course assignments. This policy helps you demonstrate your own understanding and abilities.
By focusing on your own learning and avoiding shortcuts, you'll be better prepared for future challenges. Let's make the most of this course together! If you have any questions or need support, feel free to reach out.
Course-level Usage Statements: Developing (~AIAS Levels 2-3)

Course-level Usage Statements: Applied (~AIAS Levels 3-4)
Welcome to the course! Here, you will have the opportunity to leverage AI tools to explore complex applications and deepen your understanding of the subject matter.
Key Points to Remember:
Exploratory Usage: You are encouraged to use AI tools to assist in your research and projects. These tools can help you analyze data, generate ideas, and explore advanced concepts.
Foundational Skills: Since you already possess foundational skills, you are expected to use AI tools critically and creatively. This means applying your knowledge to assess the relevance and accuracy of the information generated.
Acknowledgment and Citation: Always acknowledge and cite any AI tools you utilize in your work. This not only gives proper credit but also demonstrates your engagement with the material.
Assessment Guidelines: Each assessment will include detailed instructions on how to appropriately use AI tools. We will also demonstrate best practices in class to ensure you can maximize their potential in your work.
By integrating AI tools into your learning process, you can push the boundaries of your understanding and application. If you have any questions or need guidance, feel free to reach out!
Level 5 likely speaks to a higher-level integration of AI tools than courses at SLC currently require and may only be appropriate if AI exploration is specified in the Course Learning Outcomes.
The following are some sample assessment-level statements created using Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat.
You are required to complete this assessment independently. Use of AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, Quillbot) is not allowed and will be considered a breach of academic integrity.
Submit a process journal alongside your final work, detailing your brainstorming, drafting, and revision steps to demonstrate independent effort.
This is a reflective task based on your personal experiences and insights. AI tools must not be used to generate or edit your response.
This assignment is designed to assess your individual understanding. Please refrain from using any AI-based assistance.
You will be asked to explain your reasoning and approach during a follow-up discussion to confirm the work is your own.
You may use AI tools to assist with planning (e.g., brainstorming or outlining). The final written work must be your own. Please complete your work in an online Word document and include the shareable link in your submission.
In this assessment, AI-assisted planning is allowed. Submit your final work as a shareable online Word document. Include a short reflection at the end of the document describing how AI supported your planning process and cite the tool used.
You may use AI to help structure your ideas. Complete your assignment in an online Word document and include a link to it in your submission. Be sure to include a planning log or screenshots of your AI interactions.
You may use AI tools to help generate ideas, structure your outline, or organize your thoughts. Complete your written work in an online Word document and include the shareable link in your submission. At the end of the document, describe how AI supported your planning process and cite the tool used appropriately
AI tools may be used to co-develop your work. Complete your assignment in an online Word document and include the link in your submission. Include a reflection at the end explaining how you used AI and how you revised the content.
You are encouraged to use AI tools to support your writing process. Submit your final work as a shareable online Word document. Include a version history or screenshots showing your revisions and a citation of the AI tool used.
This assignment allows AI-assisted drafting. Please complete your work in an online Word document and submit the link. Include a commentary at the end identifying what was AI-generated, what you changed, and why.
AI tools may be used to assist with drafting and refining your work. However, you are expected to critically revise all AI-generated content. Complete your assignment in an online Word document and submit the link. Include a section at the end that documents your AI interactions, explains your revisions, and provides a proper citation of the AI tool(s) used.
You are encouraged to use AI tools throughout the entire process of this assignment. Complete your work in an online Word document and include the shareable link in your submission. At the end of the document, include a detailed reflection on how AI was used, what decisions you made, and how you ensured the final product met academic standards.
This task supports full AI integration. You may use AI to generate, revise, and polish your work. However, you must demonstrate critical oversight. Submit your final work as a shareable online Word document, and include a section that documents your AI interactions, explains your choices, and cites all tools used.
AI tools may be used extensively in this assignment. You are responsible for verifying the accuracy, originality, and appropriateness of all content. Complete your work in an online Word document and submit the link. Include a reflection that outlines your AI workflow, ethical considerations, and how you ensured academic integrity.
This assignment allows full collaboration with AI tools. You must complete your work in an online Word document and include the link in your submission. At the end, provide a transparent account of your AI usage, including prompts used, outputs received, revisions made, and citations for all tools involved.
AID (Artificial Intelligence Disclosure) Framework
The Artificial Intelligence Disclosure (AID) Framework is a structured approach designed to promote transparency and accountability in the use of AI tools. Unlike standard citations that reference fixed outputs, the AID Framework encourages users to disclose how AI tools were used, supporting the inclusion of customizable attribution statements that detail the specific AI tools employed and their functions in the research or writing process.
What it does:
Encourages students to explicitly disclose how AI tools were used in their assignments.
Provides a structured format for describing AI’s role (e.g., as a writing assistant, idea generator, editor).
Promotes responsible and critical use of AI technologies.
How it can be used:
Assignment Design: Include a requirement for an AI disclosure statement in written, coding, or creative assignments.
Assessment: Use the disclosure to evaluate students’ understanding of AI’s role and their ethical use of it.
Instruction: Teach students how to reflect on their use of AI tools and distinguish between acceptable support and overreliance.
Heading it includes:
AI tools used:
tool name, version, date used
Type of use:
conceptualization, data analysis, editing, research, project administration, visualization, and more
